How Do You Set Up Bing Webmaster Tools, and Why Does It Matter for AI Search?

To set up Bing Webmaster Tools, sign in, import your sites from Google Search Console or verify them manually, submit your XML sitemap and enable IndexNow. It matters because its AI Performance report shows when Copilot and Bing AI summaries cite your pages.

Below is each Bing Webmaster Tools setup step in order, with the menu names, the limits Bing publishes, and the mistakes that most often stop pages from being crawled.

Key Takeaways

  • The fastest route into Bing Webmaster Tools is My Sites > Import from Google Search Console: imported sites are verified automatically, up to 100 per import.
  • Add a backup msvalidate.01 meta tag, because Bing re-checks imported sites through your Google connection and can unverify them if that access is removed.
  • Submit your sitemap in the Sitemaps section and list it in robots.txt; keep lastmod accurate, because Bing treats it as a freshness signal.
  • IndexNow tells Bing (and other participating engines) about new, updated or deleted URLs. Google does not participate in it.
  • AI Performance counts how often AI answers cite your pages. It measures citations, not clicks or traffic.

Step 1: Sign In to Bing Webmaster Tools and Add Your Site

Go to bing.com/webmasters, sign in, and choose one of two routes: import sites you already verified in Google Search Console, or add a single site by URL and verify it yourself. Import is quicker; manual setup gives you a verification that does not depend on Google.

Option A: Import from Google Search Console

Bing’s official import guide describes the flow:

  1. Open My Sites and click Import.
  2. Sign in to the Google account that owns your Search Console properties and click Allow. This grants Bing read access to your verified sites and their sitemaps.
  3. Tick the sites you want and click Import.

Imported sites arrive in Bing Webmaster Tools already verified, and their sitemaps come with them. You can import up to 100 sites at a time and repeat the process for more, up to 1,000 sites per account. Bing notes that traffic data for newly verified sites can take up to 48 hours to appear, so an empty dashboard on day one is normal.

Option B: Add a site manually

In Bing Webmaster Tools, enter your full site URL in the Add a Site field. Bing then lets you enter a sitemap URL and pick the time of day your site gets the most traffic, so crawling can be scheduled outside your busy hours. Click Add and you land on the Verify Ownership page, which is Step 2.

Step 2: Verify Site Ownership

Pick one verification method from the Verify Ownership page and click Verify once it is in place. On WordPress, the meta tag is usually the easiest; if you control DNS, the CNAME record survives theme changes and redesigns.

MethodWhat you doGood fit when
XML fileDownload BingSiteAuth.xml and upload it to your site rootYou have FTP or file-manager access
Meta tagAdd <meta name="msvalidate.01" content="..."> to the head of your home pageWordPress, Shopify or any CMS with a header field
CNAME recordAdd the DNS record Bing gives you at your DNS hostYou manage DNS and want a method that survives redesigns
Domain ConnectSign in to your DNS provider from inside Bing; the record is added for youYour DNS provider supports Domain Connect (the option only appears if it does)

The meta tag Bing Webmaster Tools gives you uses the name msvalidate.01 and a 32-character code in the content attribute. On WordPress you do not need to edit theme files: most SEO plugins have a field for it. In Rank Math, paste the code under Rank Math SEO > General Settings > Webmaster Tools; in Yoast SEO, use Yoast SEO > Settings > Site connections. Paste only the code, not the whole tag, then return to Bing and click Verify.

If you used the Google import, add the meta tag anyway. Bing Webmaster Tools periodically re-validates imported sites by syncing with Search Console, and if that Google access is revoked you must reconnect or verify another way. A second method prevents a surprise loss of access.

Step 3: Submit Your Sitemap to Bing

Open Sitemaps in the Bing Webmaster Tools left menu, click Submit sitemap, paste the full sitemap URL and confirm. Then add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt so Bing can find it even without the dashboard.

For most WordPress sites the URL to submit is the index file your SEO plugin creates, such as /sitemap_index.xml in Rank Math and Yoast or /wp-sitemap.xml for the WordPress core sitemap. Submit the index, not every child sitemap; Bing follows the references inside it. The Sitemaps report in Bing Webmaster Tools then shows the submission status, the date Bing last read the file, and any processing errors.

Bing’s sitemap guidance for AI-powered search sets out the rules worth knowing before you submit a sitemap to Bing:

  • Size: up to 50,000 URLs per sitemap file, and up to 50,000 child sitemaps in one sitemap index.
  • lastmod: use ISO 8601 with both date and time (for example 2026-10-04T09:30:00+00:00) and set it to the real time the content changed, not the time the sitemap was generated.
  • changefreq and priority: Bing ignores both, so there is no point tuning them.
  • Pairing: Bing recommends combining sitemaps with IndexNow, which is Step 4.

The robots.txt line looks like Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml and can sit anywhere in the file. If you want a refresher on how sitemaps, subdomains and crawl errors fit together, read our guide to technical SEO basics before moving on.

Step 4: Turn On Bing IndexNow

Bing IndexNow support means your site can ping Bing and other search engines the moment a URL is added, updated or deleted. Set it up once through your CMS or a small script, and every later change is reported automatically.

According to the IndexNow FAQ, participating engines include Amazon, Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep, and a URL submitted to one is shared with all of them. Google is not a participant, so IndexNow does not replace your Google sitemap work. Submission also does not guarantee indexing; each engine still decides whether to crawl and index the page.

WordPress

In Rank Math (free version), go to Rank Math SEO > Dashboard, switch on the Instant Indexing module, then open Instant Indexing > Settings, choose the post types to submit, and save. Rank Math generates the key and submits URLs whenever you publish or update, skipping noindex pages. If you use a different SEO plugin, check its settings for an IndexNow option, or install the standalone IndexNow plugin. Run only one IndexNow integration so the same URL is not pinged twice.

Shopify and custom sites

Shopify has IndexNow support built in, and the IndexNow FAQ lists it among platforms with native support, so stores do not need an app for it. On a custom site, follow the IndexNow documentation:

  1. Create a key of 8 to 128 characters using only letters, numbers and dashes.
  2. Host it as a UTF-8 text file named {your-key}.txt at your site root, containing just the key. A key file in a subfolder (declared with keyLocation) only authorises URLs inside that folder.
  3. Send changed URLs as a JSON POST to https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow or https://www.bing.com/indexnow with your host, key and urlList. One request can carry up to 10,000 URLs.
  4. Read the response code and fix anything that is not 200 or 202.
ResponseMeaningWhat to do
200 OKSubmission receivedNothing
202 AcceptedReceived, key validation pendingMake sure the key file loads publicly
400 Bad RequestInvalid formatCheck the JSON body and URL encoding
403 ForbiddenKey not validKey file missing, wrong name, or content does not match
422 Unprocessable EntityURLs do not match the host or keySubmit only URLs on the host you declared
429 Too Many RequestsTreated as potential spamSlow down and stop resubmitting unchanged URLs

The FAQ also asks you to submit only real changes and to wait at least five minutes before resubmitting the same URL.

Step 5: Check Indexing and Fix Reported Issues

Once Bing Webmaster Tools starts showing data, use URL Inspection for single pages and Site Explorer and Recommendations for the whole site. These three reports tell you what Bing has crawled, what it indexed, and what it thinks is broken.

  • URL Inspection: paste a URL to see crawl and index status, SEO issues on the page, and structured data validation. Pair it with our schema markup validator guide when Bing flags markup errors.
  • Site Explorer: browse your site as a folder tree with clicks, impressions and backlink counts per section, which makes weak or orphaned areas easy to spot.
  • Recommendations: a prioritised list of site-wide issues such as missing titles, duplicate meta descriptions or broken links, with the affected URLs.
  • Backlinks: links to your site, plus lookups of other sites’ backlinks.

If a page should be indexed and is not, fix the cause first (the troubleshooting list below covers the usual ones), then use the request-indexing option in URL Inspection or let IndexNow report the update.

Step 6: Track AI Citations in the AI Performance Report

Open AI Performance to see how often Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations cite your pages. This is the part of Bing Webmaster Tools that answers the AI search question directly, because it reports citations page by page.

Bing introduced AI Performance in public preview on February 10, 2026. Its core metrics are:

  • Total citations: how many times your content was cited in AI answers in the selected period.
  • Average cited pages: the average number of your pages cited per day.
  • Grounding queries: a sample of the queries the AI used to retrieve your content when building an answer.
  • Page-level citations: which URLs were cited and how often.

A June 16, 2026 update added four views, rolling out in preview globally. Intents groups grounding queries into types such as Informational, Commercial, Navigational, Learn and Solve, Research, Creation and Local. Topics clusters related grounding queries into subjects. Citation Share shows your percentage of all citations for a grounding query. Compare overlays the previous 30 days or a custom range.

Read the numbers carefully. A citation means your page was referenced in an answer; it says nothing about placement, clicks or revenue, and grounding queries are a sample rather than a full list. Use it to see which pages AI systems cite on which topics, then strengthen them. Our GEO playbook covers how to write pages that are easier for AI systems to quote, and our SEO and GEO services can track Bing Webmaster Tools AI data for you.

Common Bing Webmaster Tools Problems and How to Fix Them

Most Bing Webmaster Tools setup problems come from a missing verification tag, an unreadable sitemap, robots.txt rules that block Bingbot, or mismatched IndexNow keys. Work through this list first.

  • Verification fails: view the page source of your home page and search for msvalidate.01. Caching or optimisation plugins can serve an old copy, so purge the cache and click Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools again.
  • Sites suddenly unverified: if you imported from Google and later removed that access, Bing Webmaster Tools can no longer re-check ownership. Reconnect, or add the meta tag or DNS record.
  • Sitemap shows errors: open the sitemap URL in a browser. A 404, a redirect, or an HTML page instead of XML will all fail. Make sure it lists only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200.
  • Pages discovered but not indexed: check for noindex tags, canonicals pointing elsewhere, robots.txt rules that block Bingbot, and thin or near-duplicate content. Indexing is never guaranteed, even for submitted URLs.
  • Fake freshness: a sitemap where every lastmod equals today’s date teaches Bing to distrust the field. Let it reflect real edits.
  • IndexNow 403 or 422: the key file is missing or mismatched, or you are submitting URLs from another host (for example www vs non-www).
  • No data yet: wait up to 48 hours after verification before troubleshooting empty Bing Webmaster Tools reports.

If several show up at once, the issue is usually wider than Bing. A full crawl with the tools in our AI SEO tools roundup will surface the same problems for every search engine.

Next Steps

With Bing Webmaster Tools verified, your sitemap submitted and IndexNow running, the setup is done. The useful work now is reading the reports every few weeks and acting on them. A sensible reading order from here is technical SEO basics for crawl health, then the GEO playbook for AI visibility, then the schema markup validator guide. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add my site to Bing Webmaster Tools if it is already verified in Google Search Console?

Go to My Sites, click Import, sign in to Google and click Allow. Select the sites you want and click Import. They arrive verified, with their sitemaps, and you can import up to 100 sites at a time. Add a backup meta tag so verification does not depend only on your Google connection.

Which Bing site verification method should I use on WordPress?

Use the meta tag. Copy the code from the msvalidate.01 tag on the Bing Webmaster Tools Verify Ownership page and paste it into your SEO plugin’s webmaster tools field, such as Rank Math’s General Settings or Yoast’s Site connections. Clear your page cache, then click Verify. If you manage DNS, a CNAME record is a sturdy second method.

Do I need to submit my sitemap to Bing and add it to robots.txt?

Do both. Submitting it under Sitemaps in Bing Webmaster Tools lets you see when Bing last read the file and any errors it found. The Sitemap line in robots.txt lets Bing and other crawlers discover it automatically. Bing accepts up to 50,000 URLs per file, so larger sites should use a sitemap index.

What is IndexNow, and does Google support it?

IndexNow is an open protocol for telling search engines that a URL was added, updated or deleted. Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yep and Amazon participate, and one submission is shared with all of them. Google is not a participant, so keep your sitemap current for Google crawling.

How long does it take for data to appear after verification?

Bing Webmaster Tools traffic data for a newly verified site can take up to 48 hours to appear. Sitemap processing and indexing take their own time and vary by site, so check the Sitemaps report for the last read date rather than expecting every page to show up straight away.

How can I see whether Copilot or Bing AI answers cite my website?

Open the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It shows total citations, average cited pages per day, a sample of grounding queries and citations per page across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners. The newer Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare views add context. It counts citations, not clicks.

Will removing Google Search Console access unverify my sites in Bing?

It can. Bing periodically re-checks ownership of imported sites by syncing with Search Console, and if that access is revoked you need to reconnect or verify another way. Adding the msvalidate.01 meta tag, an XML file or a DNS record as a second method avoids losing access to your Bing Webmaster Tools reports.
